Seasonal Hair Loss: Is It Normal?

Every year at International Hair Studio we notice two periods when clients tell us they’re shedding more hair than usual. The biggest is around May, with a second, smaller peak often occurring in October.

The good news? This is often completely normal.

Most people naturally lose around 50–100 hairs every day. During a seasonal shed, that number can temporarily increase, sometimes reaching 150–200 hairs a day. It can look alarming in the shower or on your hairbrush, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going bald.

The key question isn’t how much hair is falling out—it’s whether new hair is replacing it.

If new hairs are growing, seasonal shedding is simply part of your hair’s natural cycle. However, if you already have male or female pattern hair loss, this temporary increase in shedding can make thinning appear more noticeable.

So before blaming your shampoo or your shower drain, give it a few weeks. Seasonal shedding usually settles on its own.

If the shedding continues for several months, becomes patchy, or your hair is progressively becoming thinner, it’s worth having a professional assessment. Early diagnosis often leads to the best outcomes.
