Male-pattern baldness (Androgenic Alopecia) is the most common type of hair loss. It affects around half of all men by the time they are 50 years of age, while 70% of men will experience some sort of thinning.
This type of hair loss can start as early as the teenage years, although it varies greatly from person to person as it is controlled by one’s genetics and changing hormones. At International Hair Studio we often say that it is our genes that determine if it will happen; and our hormones that determine how fast. We must remember that this is not a disease that we must fight, rather it is a natural part of our pattern of ageing. That and that is why there is not an instant quick fix tablet to stop it, as the body does not understand what we wish to fix. It just doesn’t know we would all like hair like George Clooney as we get older; rather it follows a genetic pattern.
Often this Male-pattern baldness begins with a receding hairline or a thinning crown, but knowing how much hair you are likely to keep losing is hard to self diagnose. Many people will put off visiting an expert during the early stages whilst they are coming to terms with the change. (“Perhaps it just go away and grow back” or “perhaps it is the beer and the burgers…”) However, waiting to start treatment will make getting it back harder, only cause you extra stress and this stress accelerates the thinning.
If you are a young guy and your hair is stating to change it is highly likely that Androgenic Alopecia or male pattern baldness is your problem. You may find some similarity in the Hamilton-Norwood scale, which illustrates some of the usual patterns. (This can be found on the IHS website.) However with hair loss like this it is definite that the sooner it is treated – the easier, more effective and less expensive treatment is likely to be.
Taking regular photos and comparing the change is a good way to identify early loss. The experts at International Hair Studio are happy to help you with this, and can also advise you on how far your hair is likely to recede. They will also tell you what treatments will actually help, and which of the things you may be reading about on the internet are untrue, myths or money making schemes.
